Parley announces a workshop production of TRUMP’D by Benjamin Benne
May 17th at 7pm, at West of Lenin
Directed by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth and featuring Rebecca and Brandon
Tourino Collinsworth, Fawn Ledesma, Joe Ivey, and Andrew Lee Creech, TRUMP’D is the 5th in a series of workshop productions of new plays by local playwrights produced by Parley in 2016. Admission is pay what you will.
In TRUMP’D, we meet Alma, who crossed the border separating Mexico and the United States at age 17 to give birth to her daughter, Angel. Now, 16 years later, Donald Trump is making his ascent toward the presidency, police brutality runs rampant, and a stranger with a penchant for milk visits the cantina where Alma works. When the line between having everything to gain and nothing to lose dissipates, Alma is left to question whether the American Dream has merely been a fantasy. In 2016, who benefits from the abundance in the land of plenty?
Benjamin Benne is a Playwrights' Center 2016-17 Many Voices Fellow. He was a participant in New York Theatre Intensives 2011 summer conservatory (in association with Ensemble Studio Theatre) and the 2013 NoPassport Playwriting Intensive with OBIE Award-winning playwright Caridad Svich. His play at the very bottom of a body of water (2016 O'Neill Playwrights Conference semi-finalist; 2016 Bay Area Playwrights Festival finalist) is currently receiving development support by Umbrella Project, a Seattle-based new play advocacy group. Terra Incognita (2014 O'Neill Playwrights Conference semi-finalist) will have its world premiere this summer at Annex Theatre.

Center on Contemporary Art Releases New Pop-Up (AR)t Book
Art Book Goes High Tech, Uses Augmented Reality (AR) to Bring Virtual Art to the Real World
As part of CoCA’s ongoing effort to push the boundaries of contemporary art—in this case by bringing new technology to its publications—CoCA jurors Joseph Roberts and David Francis have worked with Curator and Producer Ray C. Freeman III to select 18 contemporary artworks to present in a technology-enhanced art volume, Pop-up (AR)t Book. Similar to a traditional pop-up book, three dimensional versions of featured artists’ work will spring to life as the viewer turns each page. But instead of elaborate paper cutouts, new technology called Augmented Reality (AR) will allow the viewer to see the artwork in three dimensions on their mobile device – iPhone, iPad, and Android.
CoCA to Celebrate Launch Of Pop-Up (AR)t at Special Reception
CoCA will celebrate the launch of “CoCA Pop-Up (AR)t,” with a Book Release Party and Exhibition at the opening reception on May 12 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at CoCA Rubix, 515 Harvard Avenue East, Seattle.
In addition to the book, the artists will be featured with backlit AR “targets” that allow visitors to view larger scale AR representations of the art in the context of a gallery show. Physical versions of the artwork will also be on view so gallery goers can experience both the “real” and the “virtual” editions of selected works. The event will also host a full-scale re-creation of the CoCA p(AR)k exhibition presented at last year’s PARKing Day event. Pieces from that event include 10-foot-tall AR trees created by Casey Scalf of sensebellum.com.
In addition to Scalf, other participants in the project include Northwest artists Miguel Edwards, Alan Fulle, Jeff Mihalyo, Ray C. Freeman III, Stephen Rock, BK Tran, j shagam, Xavier Lopez, Jr., Karen Hackenberg, L. Kelly Lyles, and Reilly Donovan together with California artists Amiko Matsuo, Megan Geckler, Corey Dunlap, and Bradley Tsalyuk, plus Joseph Reyes from Seoul, Korea.
Rock’s Studio provided the printing for the exhibition, and Castanes Architects, P.S., A.I.A. contributed software used to assemble many of the models in the book and exhibition.
How to View CoCA Pop-Up (AR)t,”
The Wikitude app used to view the 3D models in the book and exhibition can be found in the iOS App Store (itunes.apple.com…) and on Google Play (play.google.com…). To save time and avoid bandwidth issues, users should download and install the app to their phone or tablet before visiting the gallery.

Geoff Ryman is a Canadian living in the United Kingdom. His novel The King’s Last Song was inspired by a visit to an Australian archaeological dig at Angkor Wat in 2000. He has been a regular visitor since, teaching writing workshops in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap twice. Ryman’s work is boundary-breaking, edgy, and humane. He writes about Dorothy Gale and Judy Garland, far-future virus-enhanced (and suffering) people, a village woman in near-future middle Eurasia, men in 12th-century Cambodia, and the Pol Pot era, all with equal incision and compassion.

Center on Contemporary Art presents “JuarezX: Dragged Across Borders”
Politically Charged Art Exhibition Challenges Socio Political Borders
From May 5 – 28, 2016 CoCA presents “JuárezX, Dragged Across Borders,” co-curated by Joseph C. Roberts and Peter Bill. The exhibit presents work by undocumented immigrants and artists from Juarez, Mexico to explore the intersection of race, class, and migrant status at the US and Mexico border. Simultaneously, the exhibit presents readings and interactive workshops that invite visitors to consider social norms, or borders, created around gender and sexuality. CoCA is proud to present an exhibition and support artists that dissolve boundaries and invite visitors to question borders as places that allow fixed notions of identity to bend, stretch, and even disappear.
The exhibit features work by artists from Juárez, Mexico who have literally and conceptually been “dragged” across borders. Yorch Otte, an urban muralist, serigrapher and leader of the Art Collective “Rezizte", presents graffiti art on panel depicting life on the border. Gabriela Hernandez, an undocumented Seaburry Fellow and New Mexico Highlands University alum, features a series of 6’x3’ banners that represent struggles of LGBTQ and undocumented people. Mario Romero juxtaposes topics of the occult, scientific and astronomical with the border. Pulsoans Ans, graffiti artist and ANS Art Gallery owner, commands spray paint canisters to produce pieces that play with the idea of life and death as they apply to the identities in the margins. Peter Bill, Assistant Professor of New Media at Western New Mexico University, and Héctor Domínguez Ruvalcaba, Associate Professor of Queer & Border Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, documented their projections of guerrilla video texts onto the streets of Ciudad Juarez. Sarita Corderito adds witty political commentary and tasty painting/collage chops to the mix.
Special presentations include Héctor Domínguez Ruvalcaba, PhD’s reading from his work "Aesthetics and Politics of the US-Mexico Border urban art,” at 7pm during Pioneer Square artwalk on May 5. At Noon on Friday, May 6, Gabriela Hernandez will present Jotería Undocumented Workshop, a participatory workshop exploring gender identity and immigration. CoCA is able to bring this important conversation to Seattle audiences and acknowledge LGBTQ individuals in the fight for immigration rights with the support from Seattle’s Office of Arts and Culture.

Control is an illusion... Where's the remote? Retired college professor Emily Linder summons her daughters to share her recent realization: she knows the precise time of her death. In this quirky comedic drama one eccentric family will amuse and surprise you with their preoccupations, recognitions and realizations.
Director Nathan Kessler-Jeffrey said, “Richard Strand [the playwright] captures a family dealing with the new challenges of an aging parent and the old rivalries of competitive siblings. This story’s honesty and hilarity will not only touch mothers and daughters and caregivers of aging parents, but everyone who has dealt with the difficulty of growing up and watching the world change drastically around them.”
Kessler-Jeffrey previously directed the extended run of Jeeves Intervenes from TTC's 2015 Season. He also directs Taproot's bullying prevention Road Company shows that tour throughout the state of Washington.
The cast includes Laura Kenny (10 Things I Hate About You, Village Theatre's Mary Poppins) as the titular character Emily Linder with Helen Harvester (Taproot Theatre's Diana of Dobson's) as Janet, Charity Parenzini (Taproot Theatre's This Christmas) as Margaret and Annelih GH Hamilton (Arts West's Really, Really) as Jennifer.

Women and people of color represent the New American Majority, yet white men make up the majority of our political leaders. This imbalance of power is the result of the structural barriers that exclude women and people of color from running for and winning elected office.
According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research, at the current pace, women won't achieve political parity in representation until 2121. We cannot wait more than 100 years for leadership that will address our concerns and reflect our values.
That's where the Reflective Democracy Campaign comes in. Through our Campaign, we have funded projects that experiment with new strategies and approaches to building a reflective democracy.
Reflective Democracy Campaign Director Brenda Choresi Carter and WDN Vice President Jenifer Fernandez Ancona will share our campaign's groundbreaking research about who is in elected office and on our ballots, who isn’t, and why. We’ll talk about what this means in Washington, and brainstorm new approaches to breaking down the barriers that keep women and people of color from the halls of power.
This event is also open to funders and allies interested in the Reflective Democracy Campaign.

What would you do with $700,000 of Seattle’s City budget? Youth get to make that decision by participating in Youth Voice, Youth Choice Vote Week, May 21-29.
Youth Voice, Youth Choice is a new participatory budgeting initiative from the City of Seattle in which youth ages 11-25 democratically decide how to spend a portion of the City’s budget. After several months of collecting ideas from community members, and youth volunteers turning those ideas into proposals, we’re readying for the vote which will occur May 21-29. Youth will cast their vote for their favorite projects which range from park improvements to youth programs to arts funding.
If you live, work, or go to school in Seattle, are between the ages of 11-25, and want to make a difference in your community, cast your vote at an in-person polling site or vote online. The projects that receive the most votes will be funded by the City! Visit our webpage for more details on how to vote or to hold a polling site of your own: www.seattle.gov…

What are food webs made of? Plants produce food for a web of interacting animals, forming the basis for food chains and shaping an ecological community. Herbivores consume plants and have special adaptations for digesting them. Herbivores influence plants directly, through consumption, but plants can also experience 'indirect effects' through predators who control the herbivores. For example, wolf re-introduction in Yellowstone has increased willow tree growth by controlling herbivorous elk. Plants benefit indirectly. Plant pollinators can also be affected by predators, benefiting plant reproduction and survival. Ecological relationships between plants and animals can be complex. We will explore how plants can be affected by predators of herbivores in the food chain and explore trophic cascades.

The pencil is an effective tool for producing beautiful botanical works, and skill in pencil rendering is also a good basis for ongoing study of botanical art in other media, such as watercolor. It is highly recommended that you take Botanical Drawing as a prerequisite to Botanical Watercolor.
Beginning with measurement techniques, observational skills, and the unique requirements of botanical art, the class teaches use of line to accurately portray plant subjects, then moves on to understanding light’s effect on form and the use of shading for three-dimensionality.
While focusing on plants, skills acquired apply to any realistic drawing effort. All levels welcome; intermediate students can take on more advanced plant subjects. This class is recommended as a prerequisite to Botanical Watercolor. A list of supplies will be provided before the first class.

The Northwest Boychoir will hold open auditions for new members at its offices and rehearsal space at the University Heights Center in Seattle’s University District on Saturday, June 11, 2016, for enrollment in September 2016. Boys aged 6-9 are eligible to audition; no previous music or vocal training is necessary.
Audition appointments are scheduled through the Northwest Choirs office by calling 206-524-3234. Auditions are private and low-key, designed to make the boys feel comfortable and relaxed. They last about 15 minutes, and parents are strongly encouraged to be present.
Founded in 1974, the Northwest Boychoir enrolls about 150 young singers annually in five levels of training choirs. Members represent 115 public and private schools in the greater Seattle area. Northwest Boychoir music staff members are trained musicians and music educators. Members enjoy the benefit of small classes and focused instruction.
Recognized as one of the nation’s premier children’s choral programs, the Northwest Boychoir serves as the official singing ambassadors of Washington State as recognized by five consecutive governors. The Northwest Boychoir also maintains a long-standing professional relationship with the Seattle Symphony, which gives members the opportunity to perform regularly with the region’s world-class symphony orchestra.
For more information regarding auditions or the Northwest Boychoir, call 206-524-3234 or visit the website at nwboychoir.org.

The popular Polish Festival returns to Seattle Center on July 9, 2016 as part of Festal cultural programs. Come explore and experience Polish cultural traditions and contemporary achievements through live music, dance performances, workshops, exhibits, kids’ activities and more. This year’s festival will showcase Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, situated in the dynamic region of Mazovia.
Warsaw (Warszawa), situated on the shore of the Vistula river, for centuries has been guarded by the Warsaw Mermaid (Warszawska Syrenka) which is also the city’s coat of arms. After its rebirth from World War II destruction, Warsaw became a modern city offering music, museums, parks, restaurants, cafés, sport & recreation. The past of the city can be explored by visiting the historic buildings, palaces, churches and architectural complexes reconstructed according to original plans. Today, Warsaw is a center for international business, leading academic institutions, and is one of the European cultural hubs.
The largest province of Poland and the country’s heartland, Mazovia (Mazowsze), has held a significant role in Polish history. It was a seat of Polish kings and the birthplace of the most famous Polish composer, Fryderyk Chopin, and the Nobel Prize laureate Marie Sklodowska- Curie, among others. Situated in the basin of the middle Vistula and lower Bug rivers, the region offers interesting folklore, excellent regional cuisine, picturesque towns, beautiful palaces, manors and castles, and a large national park. It is one of the fastest developing regions in Poland and in Central Europe today.
Polish Festival Seattle is a family-oriented gathering place for the Greater Seattle’s multicultural community. The festival provides an opportunity for Polish entertainers to perform in front of audiences as well as Polish-American organizations and vendors to showcase their talents, products, and services. The festival is a place for Polish Americans to explore their heritage and a venue for all visitors to learn more about their Polish neighbors. We believe that through cultural awareness we build understanding and friendship with the community.
###
Polish Festival Seattle is produced by the Seattle Polish Foundation, a nonprofit 501 (c)3 organization, in partnership with the Polish Home Association and Seattle Center with valuable support from the Polish-American community. For over a century, the Polish-American community of Puget Sound has been active locally and is proud to present Polish cultural traditions at the Seattle Center, as part of Festal cultural program fostering understanding between cultures and building a greater community overall.

Most of us remember George Carlin as a provocative comedy legend always eager to buck the establishment. But what about the man behind the standup? In A Carlin Home Companion, Carlin's daughter Kelly Carlin shares her story of growing up with the legendary comedian—from her front row seat to Carlin's comedic invention to her frequent role as the only "adult" in a family known for their alcoholism, cocaine addition, drug arrests, psychotic breaks, and crippling IRS debt. Vivid, hilarious, and heartbreaking, the book contemplates the role of her father in her life and what it takes to move beyond our childhoods and forge a life of our own. Cariln will join us for a discussion and signing of the eye-opening, insightful, and humorous read.

Flow ~
In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does. The hallmark of flow is a feeling of spontaneous joy, even rapture, while performing a task.

Flow-Artist ~
Individuals who practice object manipulation with props such as a hula-hoop(s), poi, or contact-balls. They are similar to jugglers, and may even use bowling-pins and the like, except their primary goal is to achieve a meditative mental state called "flow" rather than just entertain but as the tools themselves become extensions of a performer's both body and energy flowing forth in this enhanced cosmic state, FLOW Artists can present a truly unique visually stunning dance performance!
The 2nd annual Seattle FLOW Showcase ~

The Detlef Schrempf Foundation will combine their annual Golf Classic and Ripple of Giving Gala in a one day event on Monday, June 27, 2016. The Detlef Schrempf Celebrity Golf Classic will take place at Glendale Country Club, followed by the Gala, Auction and Concert that evening at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. A long day, but well worth it, when you consider Grammy Award-winning country group, THE BAND PERRY will be performing at the Gala with sibling sensations Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry.
The Golf Classic begins at 8:30 AM, and the Gala at 5:30. The Foundation expects a record-breaking crowd at the evening event, with many in-and-out of town celebrities. Scheduled to attend are Kevin Calabro, Spencer Hawes, Nick Collison, Kevin Solbo, Jermaine Kearse and Brent Barry, to name just a few.
THE BAND PERRY won a Grammy Award for Best Country Group Performance in 2015 and has numerous Billboard #1 and top-ten singles. If you were fortunate enough to attend the Gala last year with Darius Rucker, you know the magic and intimacy of this event.
Golf foursomes are nearly sold out and tickets to the gala are still available. Proceeds of the event benefit Boyer Children’s Clinic, Outdoors For All, Pediatric Interim Care Center and Seattle Children’s Autism Center.

The Illuminatio Project presents the Dance Theatre, ILLUMINATIO: YO SOY, premiering at Velocity Dance Center in Seattle on Friday, May 20th at 7pm. This project is the result of a collaboration between Amanda Goodwin, Seattle choreographer, and Antonio Delgado from Spain, author of the play and acting director. The show features an innovative fusion of artistic disciplines. On the one hand, dance brings its universe of beauty and relationship with space, body, feeling and ecstasy, and on the other, the universe of theatre contributes to the work the moment of catharsis that comes as the culmination of a conflict born from a frustrated desire.
“ILLUMINATIO: YO SOY” presents the archetypal drama of the double nature of humanity, material and spiritual, and how this separation is the source of all pain, fear and evil. The interior world of the human soul and the characters that abide within it, the interior struggle and the final victory of illumination as the union between our divinity and our humanity come to life in this stirring performance.

Today, over 23 percent of the U.S. population self-identify as "Nones," a term for individuals with no particular religious affiliation. But for journalist Corinna Nicolaou, not following a particular religious practice does not preclude religious curiosity. In her new book, A None's Story, Nicolaou tours America's four major religions—Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam—to see what her life might lack without them. What she gives readers is a fascinating portrait of the role of religion in America and a perspective of spirituality and belief that refuse to be constrained to just one faith. For a look inside Nicolaou's journey and a refreshing interfaith discussion, join us for what is sure to be a thought-provoking book signing and conversation with Corinna Nicolaou and The Interfaith Amigos.
